Healthy Volunteer Study

Enrolling

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate early safety and effectiveness of investigational low-intensity ultrasound that may one day improve conditions such as addiction, anxiety, chronic pain, and tremor.

The Technology

Low-intensity ultrasound uses focused sound waves, similar to those used in medical imaging, to deliver precise pulses of energy to specific regions of the brain. The sound waves are generated by a device placed on your head, and the energy levels used are low and within international safety guidelines. While ultrasound is commonly used in medical applications, its use in this study is experimental and has not been approved by the FDA for treatment.

The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) component of our study is crucial for ensuring accurate and precise application of low-intensity ultrasound. MRI provides detailed, real-time images of your brain, allowing us to target specific regions with high precision. The MRI scanner uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create images – there is no radiation involved. During the experiment, you will be in the MRI scanner while we deliver the low-intensity ultrasound. The combination of low-intensity ultrasound with MRI allows us to both precisely target the stimulation and observe its effects on brain activity.

Inclusion Criteria

We will recruit up to 150 healthy English-speaking male and female subjects between the ages of 22-80.

Study Description: This multi-year research study is designed to evaluate how targeted sound waves affect specific regions of the brain while participants are in an MRI scanner. Participants may also be asked to complete additional questionnaires between visits.

Participant Time Commitment: Multiple sessions (with an expected session length of 2-3 hours) over a 4-8 week period.

Study Compensation: You will be compensated $100/hour. Parking costs will be reimbursed if you drive to the study site.

Study Sites: Berkeley, CA and Mission Bay, San Francisco, CA
